Rebellion for Future, the first feature documentary by visual artist Saku Soukka, portrays the Extinction Rebellion Finland community from the inside. What is the price of questioning society’s established norms? What does it feel like to face powerful authorities and their harsh tactics? Filmed over two years, the film closely follows events from Lapland’s wild wetlands to the streets of Helsinki. In their struggle to curb the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, activists use their own bodies to block factories, infrastructure and roads. Encounters with the police make it difficult, and the rebels sometimes end up in custody and in court. Sometimes they have to face also violence.

Saku Soukka
Saku Soukka (born 1982) works mostly with film and photography. He has had about 25 solo exhibitions and participated in about 30 group exhibitions in the visual arts context in 8 countries. His first feature documentary film, Rebellion for Future premiered at the 2025 Helsinki International Film Festival – Love and Anarchy and it was nominated for the Jussi Award for Documentary Film of the Year 2025. Transitioning from photographic works, installations and experimental videos to documentary film narration feels natural for him, because his artworks have often been narrative and documentary in style, and they have often combined text, image and sound (e.g. videos, photo and poetry book and audio poems). After completing his debut film, he feels he has found the most suitable way to make art for himself, and now his main professional passion is to create immersive documentaries that are psychologically profound, poetic, and visually captivating.
