Dejan Dukovski is a Macedonian writer, dramaturge, playwright and screenwriter, born in 1969 in Skopje.
He graduated in dramaturgy from the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Skopje, in the class of Professor Goran Stefanovski, where he later began his academic career. He worked as a dramaturge at Macedonian Radio and Television, and since 2015 he has been engaged at the Macedonian National Theatre in Skopje. He was also a writer-in-residence at Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg.
Dukovski is considered one of the most important representatives of contemporary Macedonian drama and postmodern playwriting. His works question social norms, institutionalized values and the existential dilemmas of modern man, often through a strong, provocative and uncompromising theatrical expression.
His best-known and most frequently performed play, “Powder Keg” (Bure baruta), was first staged at the Macedonian National Theatre in 1994. The play has been translated into numerous languages and performed in more than 19 countries, including Greece, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, Japan, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Dukovski’s works have been translated into 18 languages and performed in more than 100 theatres worldwide, making him the most frequently performed playwright from North Macedonia. He is the recipient of numerous honours and awards for his literary and dramatic work.
Among his most important works are “Balkan Is Not Dead” (Balkan nije mrtav, 1993), “Powder Keg” (Bure baruta, 1994) and “Who the F* Started This?”** (Mame mu ebam koj prv počna, 1997).
