Misha is a silent little boy living in a Serbian immigrant neighborhood in Zurich. One day, he finds an abandoned kitten and puts it in his backpack. At home, his parents’ marriage is falling apart, which weighs heavily on him. Dad is happy to see the kitten, but Mom wants it out of the house. After a harsh family argument, Misha hides the kitten under the stairs and tries to get another street cat to act as its mother. At school, when Misha’s teacher meets with his parents, Misha finally speaks up honestly in fluent German — a language his mother does not understand. The kitten becomes very sick, and Misha decides to get rid of it to save the family. As the kitten approaches its dying breath, Misha faces the hardest decision of his life — but chooses not to kill it. Now, he is ready to start his first true friendship with a silent Swiss girl sitting next to him.
