Echoes of Chornobyl is a documentary about memory, testimony, and the cost of telling the truth. Originally planned around legendary Ukrainian photographer Igor Kostin, the project collapses when he tragically dies in a car crash on the eve of production. Undeterred, director Lana Delaroche pivots to capture the stories of two other photographers and a sound designer who documented the 1986 disaster firsthand. Juxtaposing the human tragedy with the thriving wildlife and reclaiming nature of the Exclusion Zone, the film serves as a vital act of preservation. Today, the documentary takes on a heartbreaking new urgency as the relentless passage of time and the outbreak of Russia’s full-scale invasion have severed contact with the remaining witnesses.

Lana Delaroche
Lana Delaroche is an independent documentary filmmaker and producer with a strong focus on historical memory and human resilience. She is known for her acclaimed documentary Sunday in Strasbourg, which explores the lives of Ukrainian forced laborers from the Donbas during the Third Reich and was successfully screened at numerous festivals, including the Metro Kinokulturhaus in Vienna. Deeply connected to the subject of Chornobyl since working as a translator for the legendary photographer Igor Kostin in 2009, she dedicated over a decade to bringing Echoes of Chornobyl to life. When the original production company withdrew following Kostin's tragic death, Delaroche showed immense resilience by completing the film entirely independently with her own funds. She is deeply passionate about preserving the voices of historical witnesses whose stories might otherwise be erased by time and war.
