Not so long ago, the floodplains of Montenegro along Zeta, Morača, Bojana River, and Skadar Lake were covered with vast forests of the Skadar oak. As people developed their settlements, they cut down most of the trees for building their homes and clearing land for agriculture, so today these forests are reduced to small islands of communities and tree-lined streets.
The Skadar oak is the only protected oak species in Montenegro, as it is endemic to this region, but at the same time, its survival is most threatened, and its story is not widely known to the public. We invite you to hear its story, to get to know its existence, history, role in ecosystems, its beauty, and perhaps, just perhaps, once in a lifetime, collect an acorn, nurture a young Skadar oak, and plant it in its natural habitat.
